The OceanBox

The OceanBox has been developed in response to an increasing demand for use data collected by commercial fishing vessels in fisheries science, particularly for enlarging the data basis behind the estimates of stock abundance. The OceanBox independently collects sensor information about the targeted fish and relevant ecosystem that can be analysed for various purposes.

SEAT Phase 2

The main purpose of this project is to further develop SEAT into a practical tool for skippers in Dutch pelagic fisheries. SEAT I has proven the concept, but practice showed that there are a few unforeseen factors that make SEAT not always successful in practise.

SEAT Phase 1

The aim of this project is to develop a species identification algorithm based on multifrequency echosounder data that helps skippers to make more objective decisions on the separation of mackerel from horse mackerel in areas of co-occurrence. The product uses the latest technology in scientific species classification and multiple frequency acoustics.

Industry data collection

The report that is a result of this project describes a practical approach to explore and test the potentials of the Pelagic Freezer Trawler Association in providing valuable information to science and fisheries policy makers in an efficient way. We demonstrate the mutual benefit for fishermen and scientist in exchanging and utilizing data and information on a daily basis.

Skippers dashboard experiment

Skippers Dashboard is a computer programme that forms the platform where environmental data and historic catch data are collected, manipulated and visualised to predict where bycatch is most likely to occur. It collects (publicly available) environmental information and combines it with historic (by-) catch data.

Usage of fish bycatch and fish waste

The EU landing obligation (or discard ban) will undoubtedly increase the amount of non-consumable fish (parts). Commissioned by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sustainovate has made a quick scan of possible markets for this unwanted bycatch.
